Wrapping Up Rhymes
February 29, 2020
February came and went so quickly that we ran out of time to do all of the crafts and activities that we had in our curriculum. That doesn’t mean that we didn’t enjoy the ones we did do. This post may contain affiliate links. The children enjoyed doing the Cake Walk game. I placed the number cards around the alphabet, caterpillar rug that we use for circle time. We put on the song Pat-a-Cake and they walked around in a circle on or next to the cards. When the music stopped they had to stand near the number they were closest to. I would call out a number and whoever was on that number got to put a heart on the cake poster. It took many times around the circle to fill up that cake. I did my best to pick numbers that allowed the children to take turns.
The kids were able to put the baking story cards in order pretty easily. We enjoy making cupcakes and other things in the kitchen. Fill the Cupboard was a game with a die and some cardboard bones. The children rolled the die and put the bone on the number they rolled. They played that several times throughout the day.
We talked about who lives in each child’s house. Every family has some similarities and differences. They enjoyed this rhyme as we imagined a house made out of a shoe filled with children. We gave the children a paper with a shoe and the rhyme printed out. They cut out the rhyme and glued it to the shoe before lacing the yarn. We helped them tie the bow. They were encouraged to decorate the shoe afterwards.
Little Boy Blue horns were super easy and fun. They got a tub and a snow cone cup to decorate with markers. we cut a hole in the bottom of the cup so their voices would carry out of the tube through the “horn”. We glued them together and they put sticky dots as keys.
I found these supply caddies at dollar tree. I added crayons, markers, scissors and glue sticks to them so that it is easier for them to have the supplies on the table for them to create. I really don’t like glue sticks so we use bottles of glue more often. We have an abundance of puzzles and we encourage them to do some daily. We have puzzles for all skill levels and they master them quite quickly.
Tell us what YOUR favorite nursery rhyme was when you were a child, or now. I don’t really have a favorite. But I think we all had fun singing the songs, playing the games and making the crafts. Goodbye February! See you next year.
