World Market

February 13, 2021

his week we explored the diverse cultures through our crafts and music time. This post may contain affiliate links. Something we enjoy at least once or twice a week is doing music time WITH our instruments. Many of our instruments came in our monthly Toy Box from Experience Curriculum. We have gotten two different drums over the last two years. Those are favorites with the kids.

People wear masks for many different reasons. Many time it is for a costume or maybe even a celebration. Masks are sometimes worn in parades and some kinds of parties. The Make & Play was to make a Carnival Mask. The feathers were a fun thing to add.

Kites are usually made with sticks, fabric and string. They come in all sizes and shapes. Some are very big and some are much smaller. Another Make & Play activity was a paper kite. We made them with paper plates, paint, crepe paper streamers and yarn. The kids decided on their own to do different shapes in the center. It started with one little girl who said she wanted a heart. They enjoyed painting the plates and running around with the kite to make it ‘fly”.

Rugs are something you can find all over the world. There are many different designs, colors and sizes of rugs. In many places, the people weave the rugs and sell them in the market. Some people sit on the rugs in stead of on furniture. The kids Invitation to Create activity was Sewing a Rug. It had pre-punched holes and they had a piece of yarn. They could “sew” the yarn in whatever pattern they wanted.

Our letter of the week was K. Each month they have three letters to work on and each has a picture to color. Some of them are getting really good at coloring and some have to really be in the mood to color.

Our Forest Friends book this month is A Clubhouse For All. Each month, the books have the same characters, not always all in each books. And they teach a character trait for them to work on. This one is about making a clubhouse big enough for ALL the friends.

Drums are an instrument that can be played with a stick or with our hands. Some are colorful and some are very plain. The Make & Play was Design a Drum. Some got really creative and some did smaller designs. Each one was perfect. They had two lids and a paper strip to make it. We used markers, they LOVE using markers!

We have several CD’s with music from around the world. Many we just jump around and sing to. Some we make music with instruments and we can’t even HEAR the music. On the Animal Playground CD there is a song from Brazil called No More Monkeys Jumping on the Bed. It is a version of a favorite but with a different accent. They LOVE it! Our drums, as I said, came from our curriculum company,
Experience Curriculum. They find the coolest things for our boxes.

Lanterns serve many purposes. We can use them to see in the dark. Some cultures use them in celebrations. The
Make & Play was to make a paper lantern. After they were put together we let them glue some jewels on them to make them decorative and sparkle a bit. Then we put a handle on them so they could carry them and pretend they were lighting their way on their travels.

Experience Curriculum gives us lots of extra resources. One of them is a coloring page for each day’s theme. We can choose to print them out and use them, or not. I loved how these two students coloring these. I had to share it with you!

I hope you enjoyed our week. Check back next week as we travel to some amazing places around the world!
