Types of Dinosaurs
January 17, 2021
The second week of our Dinoland unit at BCAA was all about the different types of dinosaurs there were. We highlighted some of the favorites. This post may contain affiliate links. Experience Early Learning curriculum had some super fun ideas for this week and we did most of them.
We always gather things to go along with our topic each month. Books and puzzles are a huge part of our school. We get a book and a puzzle from Experience Curriculum each month. They also send us a magnet set that matches the book and puzzle. We put it on a magnet board that is attached to the front door. The kids play with that daily. This month it has these fun dinos that play different instruments.
Since books are a foundational part of our teaching strategy, we have a huge library to draw from for every topic. When we find new ones that we love, we add them. If there is a subject we don’t have a book for, we will order some we really like. I love Usborne Books & More books so much that I became a book lady for them. We have book parties to raise money for our school and to get more books. Here are just a few dinosaur books from UBAM. Nibbles The Dinosaur Guide is a super fun one. It is a second book in a series about Nibbles the Book Monster! They like to read that one every day!
We started off the week with a Make & Play that we kept playing with all week. They each made two puppets; a brontosaurus and one with green leaves. They got to use colored blocks to build a dino land for them to play with their puppets and have little puppet shows.
An Invitation to Create was making a stegosaurus out of a small paper plate, markers and scissors. We didn’t tell them what to do but talked about how the stegosaurus has 17 plates on their back and asked them how they could make the plates to put on there. They did a great job. One child didn’t finish, he is not quite 3 so he doesn’t get to use the scissors on his own yet. He had fun using markers with the other kids.
A second Invitation to Create was using dino stencil. We offered them a couple of colors of pain and a sponge for each. They didn’t have to do both colors but they all chose to. They had to learn to hold the paper stencil down and not let it move in order to get the print to have the exact shape. After it dried, some of the kids drew some trees and other things around it. Some did not want to.
This Invitation to Create was a sheet of shapes for each child and a blank paper. They were able to take the shapes and create dinosaurs with them. They really enjoyed it. Some made dinosaurs that we know the names of and one boy made up his own dinosaur. I love that. During these activities and many others, we encourage the children to use their imagination and have a great time creating and learning.
That is a wrap of this past week’s fun. Check back next weekend. We will be sharing what we learn all about Dinosaur Body Parts.
