Island Fun

June 27, 2020

This week we finish up Treasure Island with Island Fun. This post may contain affiliate links. Our topics were luau, island dancing, surfing, island music and sunset. They made leis out of straws and paper flowers on yarn. We cut the straws in smaller pieces and they strung it on. Just make sure you have enough yarn to go over their heads with it knotted.

One Make & Play craft was island dancers. We watched videos of island dancer so the children could see what that was. They got to decide if they were making a girl or a boy dancer. They used green paper as the grass skirt. The bowl they decorated was larger than some of the bowls we used in other projects. They were encouraged to draw things on the bowl that on on islands.

An Invitation to Create was getting to design their own surfboards. We watched videos with children surfing. They got a big kick out of that. Watching them get up and fall down and get back up again. Each child was given their own pallet of paints to use. It was cool to see how each one did something different.

As we came to the end of our theme, the kids created postcards to send to someone special. I printed something on some paper for them to write on the postcard. On the front they drew things that we learned about this month. I think they turned out great.

This month the Decoder is for the -op word family. These were really easy for the kids to read.

All month long the children have been coloring this Treasure Island book. I encouraged them to take their time because the books are for their home library. I am so proud of their hard work.

We have had a wonderful time with this theme. What was your favorite topic?
