Dinosaur Body Parts
January 23, 2021
We have had dinosaur themes before at our school but I have to say THIS has been the most fun we have had doing it. This post may contain affiliate links. Every topic we have done since changing to Experience Early Learning curriculum has been this way. This is our third school year with them and it just keeps getting better every year.
As I shared last week, we enjoy having puzzles and books to go along with our monthly theme. Usborne Books & More has some great puzzles that include a book inside. They also have a great Shine-A-Light series that uses a flashlight, a favorite at BCAA, with a book about dinosaurs. They have a dinosaur book in their sound books series, too. This dino puzzle has larger pieces that make it just the perfect size. The colors are brilliant.
Starting out our week learning about the different body parts of a dinosaur, we learned about how they start out IN an egg. During this Invitation to Create they got to color an egg shape however they wanted. Some were more interested than others but they had fun talking about it and watching some videos about the topic. We continued our stegosaurus game of rolling a dice to add the plates on the back of it. We like to keep things out for them to do throughout the month once we have introduced it so that during times when they finish early they can go back to an activity they enjoyed from a different day. It doesn’t have to be a one and done kind of thing. They enjoyed doing the Dino Roll and Match to see which dinosaur got the most rolls. They would put a link on whichever one the cube landed on. This is another game they will have access to during the final week of our theme.
These two Make & Play activities were a HUGE hit. A few children still had their dino head at school so they got to put it on with their dino feet. The dino head was fun because they got to glue the teeth on and had big sticker eyes for the front. They wore the dino headband around most of the day. Later in the week we did the feet. They got to decorate them and then cut them out before putting the paper straps on to slip their feet into. One boy pretended he was a velociraptor.
We used one of our Invitation to Create activities for our Parent’s Day Out. We keep our monthly theme each month on that one Saturday. They had so much fun deciding what kind of dinosaur they were going to build out of the different types of noodles. Our youngest student made a T-Rex.
We have ONE week left of Dinoland. In February, we will kick off our Global Passport theme. Our four weekly topics will be Travel Tools, World Market, Man-made Wonders and Natural Wonders. We are going to grab our passport and a suitcase and explore things around the world. We will learn about the world market and find different goods there are. We will make a mask and drum as we celebrate cultures. We will explore different world wonders like the Grand Canyon, Great Wall of China and Great Pyramids. It is going to be a fun month!
Make sure to come back next weekend to see how we wrap up Dinoland!
