Book Review: The English Masterpiece by Katherine Reay

Picture
I wasn't sure if I would like this book or not, but I read it because it was the challenge book for February. I got it on KU but ended up buying it on Audible after I had gotten about 20% of the way through it. I wanted to be able to keep reading even when I had other things to do. I found out that I had read another one of Katherine Reay's books that I enjoyed, The Berlin Letters.

Even if you aren't interested in painting and famous art museums, this book will give you a closer look into the world of art and the intricacies of how famous artist's work is handled or mishandled. This book is set in 1970's London art world. I love the fact that Ms. Reay is so dedicated to her research because novels are my favorite way to learn history. I appreciate the fact that in the author's notes she gives us a few gems from her research.

One of the things that drew me in was the points of view of the two women throughout the book. Lily is written in first-person. We get to experience things very vividly through her eyes. During the galleries special exhibit honoring Picasso due to his recent death, the description of the event is so vividly painted (pun intended) with words. It is almost like the reader is right there seeing the people gathered and the paintings on the walls and feeling the excitement bubbling up inside of Lily. When she stops in her tracks and does a double take, the world seems to stop. She can no more stop herself from saying the words "It's a forgery" than she can stop breathing. Everyone around her stops talking and it feels like the world is frozen in time.
Diana is written in 3rd person. She is the gallery's keeper of the Moder Collections and Lily is her assistant. Diana has worked her way up to this position and is doing everything she can to keep it. For Lily, this is a dream come true. Lily has put both their jobs in jeopardy by speaking those words in front of everyone at the showing, including the press.

An insurance company has sent an art investigator to find out about the painting that is said to be a forgery before they can compensate the owner. He knows a lot about art and gets right to business of figuring out what Lily knows about that painting and about art in general. He plays a big part in how things unfold although Lily is the one who does a great deal of her own investigating. At one point he asks her if she is in the right business because she finds out some important information many times.

Things aren't how they look on the surface and I got carried away with the story as things unfold. Lily's family is a bit complicated and at first, we don't know why. We find out at the beginning that she has another big regret, like she regrets speaking up about the portrait. I enjoyed how that unfolded and came to a resolution with her sister and then her mom.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys learning history when it is intertwined in a fictional story. Once you've read several chapters, it becomes difficult to put down. I switched back and forth between audible and e-book. The narrator was very good. I enjoyed her accent and style of reading.

Favorite Quotes:

"Her example has taught me that if you have status, money, and power, you don't need to talk about it. Rather you wear it lightly, effortlessly, like an Egyptian cotton shift on a warm summer day."

"Sometimes an artist needs to begin in secret because, just like those unfinished works she loves, true expression can be daunting, paralyzing, and even terrifying. It's a solitary, often painful venture and it's almost impossible to share such vulnerability with others."

Book REview: What We Hide and Where Secrets Lie by Colleen Coble and Rick Acker

Picture
WHAT WE HIDE

This is my first book of Colleen’s. I decided this year I was going to branch out of my usual genre and this title intrigued me. Her and Rick worked wonderfully together, and I look forward to more of their collaborations.

The writing was well done! The narrator on Audible was perfect. I LOVED the first-person point of view of the ONE character that seems to be behind all the trouble.  We get to wonder who it might be throughout the book! I was completely clueless until the reveal. The main characters are written in third person.

One thing after another kept me on my toes as they tried to unravel the mystery. I loved the court scenes. I’m a big Perry Mason fan so it was neat to see all the detective work and cross examinations.

The main characters have delt with a serious loss and they handled it very differently. He turns to drinking and she runs from that instead of standing by him and helping him quit. This book starts after time has passed. He has gotten on a better path, stopped drinking and wants to see if they still have a chance together. She doesn't want to feel those old feelings for him, but she just can't help it. She still loves him. Before she admits she loves him, she files for divorce and gives him the papers when he comes to tell her he wants a second chance.

Mysteries are solved but many more are uncovered and waiting to be resolved. We only think we know the answers.
WHERE SECRETS LIE

Book two in the Tupelo Grove series did not disappoint. This book starts where the first book left off. It is filled with even more mystery and family secrets that lead to more to be discovered in this book and the next.

We delve deeper into the issue of stolen artifacts and smuggling while the university that they work for is on the verge of financial collapse. Savannah and Hez end up in more danger as they strive to save the school and solve the mysteries. There is so much more going on behind the scenes with the university that I am not even sure they have shown us all of them.

There are also some strange things going on that have nothing to do with the school but cause problems for them personally as they try to rebuild their relationship. I guessed who was behind those things pretty easily after the first book. There is only one person against them being together.

There are so many twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. I listened to it in one day on Audible right after I finished book one. I can't wait for book three to come out next month.

Book Review: Once Upon A Wardrobe by Patti Callahan

Picture
I was mistaken about this book being a quick read. There were days I didn't read for various reasons but one of the things that had me reading at a slower pace is the fact that I was afraid if I read too quickly that I would miss something. I finally had enough and sped up my reading speed because I couldn't stand not knowing how things unfolded any longer.

Once Upon a Wardrobe is enchanting and inspirational. Like The Chronicles of Narnia, it draws you into a world of imagination and discovery. I came away changed in many ways. This is a story inside a story inside another story.

A girl, Megs and her brother, George are seeking the answer to one question; "Where did Narnia come from?" George begs his sister to ask C.S. Lewis himself that question. Because there is no one Megs loves more than George and knowing he doesn't have long to live, she sets out to find the answer to that question. Instead of Mr. Lewis giving her a simple answer to that question, he begins to tell her stories.

She takes the stories back to George and reads them to him. When he hears the stories, his mind and imagination transport him into the world of story where he can see things as clearly as if he is right there watching in the very room.

I have some favorite quotes I want to share.

"There are books enough to find a thousand worlds. You can play in the woodlands or write home or mend your socks. It is only for lack of imagination that you are bored."

"These stories make us remember something we forgot. They make a young boy want to hop out of bed and see the ruins of a castle. These kinds of stories wake us up."

"Grief is the price I paid for loving fiercely, and that was okay, because there was no other choice but to love fiercely and fully."

This book made me want to reread all of the Narnia books and so many other things that C.S. Lewis wrote. It made me excited to read with a new outlook, to look for those hidden stories inside of the story. I felt so many emotions as I read the last quarter of the book. A book that can pull that much out of me deserves to be shared with others.

Book Review: Shadowed Witness by Angela Carlisle

Picture
Book two in this series did not disappoint. It had some secondary characters from book one, plus the two main characters, Corina and Bryce.

Allye Jessup is Bryce's sister. She is quirky and a bit clumsy. She is experiencing some growing health issues that doctors are trying to find answers to.  She is keeping it to herself until they find a correct diagnosis. She witnesses a potential murder, but no one believes her.  There was no body where she says it should be and the one who found her says she fell down the stairs.  She begins to wonder if she really saw what she thinks she did.

Eric Thornton is a police officer that helped solve the case in book one. He is now a police detective and gets called to help with her case. He is drawn to help her despite the doubt others have because he knows her well enough to know something happened. When he sees the bruises on her neck, he knows it wasn't because of falling down the stairs. He really wants to help her and gets very concerned as odd things start happening, including threats warning her to retract her story.

It is fast paced with mystery popping up at every turn. I had to keep reading to find out how it would turn out. I kept thinking I knew who was behind it but there were so many twists that I had to rethink it. There were a few surprises when it all unfolded.

I'm looking forward to book three. I know she is going to have more mysteries to solve.

Running Journey: Hot Chocolate 10K February 2026

Picture

Picture

Picture

A big day on my running journey was Saturday, February 7, 2026. My youngest daughter bought us tickets for my birthday back in November. She didn't just buy one for me but bought herself one because she wanted to do something WITH me. That was the true gift, time with my grown daughter. We had planned to "train" from December to the race, but we didn't. She works full time in food service on top of working with me four mornings a week. I had all sorts of excuses, mostly just not feeling like it. I have a high stress job and by the end of the workday I'm just done. I also wanted to run outside instead of the little treadmill I bought so I COULD run inside when it got dark too quickly or it was too cold. I let those things stop me from doing what I knew I wanted to do and needed to do.  That didn't stop me from getting out there and doing my best.

I started getting really excited after I picked up our race packets on that Thursday night. Friday, I gathered all the things I'd need for an early Saturday morning race. I got us both some long sleeve shirts when I picked up the packets so we could wear them during the race and after because they are so comfortable. I did my best to set an early bedtime but I'm terrible at that. I went to bed around midnight and got up at 5:30 so I could get dressed and have some time to do my Bible Recap before my daughter arrived.

We got to Fair Park by 7:30 and had some time to walk across the parking lot and grab a few pics before the race started. We weren't sure of the plan, but I had downloaded three of the audio runs from my MADE4 app that I use frequently on my runs. My plan was to use those to make running the 6.2 miles as easy as it is to run the shorter distances. The run audios always make it pass so quickly and I feel so good afterwards. She told me she didn't want to run by herself, so I decided to stick with her. She was listening to her favorite TV show on her phone while I was listening to the runs. I started telling her what I was going to do for each interval, not to make her do it, but so she would know. She decided to run with me when I ran and walk when I walked.

The miles passed so quickly. Each mile marker on our app took us by surprise. That spurred us on and we put more effort into the running intervals. She even made a short video at mile five to send in our family text showing that we had made it that far and were so close to finishing the race. We walked maybe a fourth of the time, but we ran the rest. It could have been a bit more or less, I'm not really sure. I just know we did a great job and finished strong. We ran through the finish line and got our medal.

They had the Finisher's Cup waiting to be picked up. The first thing we wanted was that banana. It tasted so good. We both agreed they could have had most of the things in the cup in exchange for another banana. We ate the banana and pretzels dipped in the chocolate. We found a place to sit down to enjoy our treat before walking back to the car. The walk to the car seemed to take forever, maybe if we were walking much slower than before. My feet were feeling a bit of pain but not as badly as they have in the past for a really long run.

The drive back to Arlington was filled with talk of the race. We picked up my husband and took our daughter to our favorite burger place for our first real meal of the day. It was fun to sit and talk for a bit while we enjoyed our food. I went home after and did my best to lay down and talk a nap before having to get up. I slept a little bit not a deep sleep. I normally can't even sleep that much after a race. I get so keyed up that it stays with me.

I really loved the time together with my daughter doing something that is fun and good for us. This race has so much meaning for me because it was my very first race 13 years ago. I did the 5K. I've done two 5K's, one 15K and now one 10K. I'm not sure if we will do the 10K again next year or do the 15K. We just need to decide now so we can buy the early bird tickets cheaper. I'd love to do the 15K just because I feel it is a big accomplishment. My feet want me to pick the 10K. I'll do whatever she decides.

The weather is getting nice and the days are growing longer. That means I can get more runs outside where I can get some sunshine and get out of the house for a bit. My goal is to get out there two or three times a week.

Thanks for joining me for the race update. I'm going to be putting some "look back" posts for some other runs soon, just so I have them all in one place. I love to look back at all the fun I've had doing the races.

Book REview: Secondary Target by Angela Carlisle

Picture
If I didn't know this was a debut novel, I would NOT have known just by the writing. It is THAT good! Fast-paced and full of action! Excellent character building. The storyline built throughout the book and kept me on the edge of my seat, most of the way.

The two main characters, Corina and Bryce have a "history". We learn that they used to date, and we don't find out what broke them up for a little while. AND there is an even deeper backstory with Corina and her father. That one has some dark elements to it. We get glimpses of each backstory in the midst of all the drama going on in the present.

Strange things start happening when Corina has to move in with her dad so her duplex can get repaired. Bryce moves into his mom's old house across the street from them. Bryce, of course, is going to help out any way he can because their families have known each other for years and he's just that kind of guy. His sister is Corina's best friend and she comes to help, too. Corina finds strange notes and keeps getting hangup calls. Things got even more strange as I turned the pages.

I kept trying to figure out WHO it was that was after her, but I have to admit, I was stumped until it was revealed. GREAT JOB, Angela!

This book isn't graphic despite the fact that murder and stalking ARE a part of it. It is done in a way that most things are left up to your imagination with only the needed amount of explanation being done. The love story was woven into the story in such a sweet way as they are trying to save lives and solve the mystery. The mystery isn't just what was happening right then. It was also what happened in the past. They needed to know how to connect the dots to find the patten between the past and present.

Great read! I picked up book two the next morning.

Book Recap: January 2026

Picture
I started the year off with nine books. I enjoyed them all.

Before We Were Us was the first book I read this year. Three of the four contemporary romances that I read are a complete series: Memory Lane, Rocky Road and Uneasy Street. I loved the entire series very much.

I listened to The Count of Monte Cristo because it was such a HUGE book. I knew I could listen while I did other things and I could speed it up if I wanted to. It was really in-depth that at times it was hard to keep track of all the people and situations. Things all fell into place towards the end of the book.

The two suspense novels were not from the same series, but they were from the same author. Unexpected Danger and Deadly Secrets kept me on my toes trying to figure out how it would unfold.

The two historical novels were very different. To Love a Beast was a fun Beauty and the Beast retelling. It is now one of my favorite retellings. Against the Rain is number five in a six-book series that takes place in Alaska. The family dynamics is such a draw for me. Can't wait for book six to come out.

You can check out my full reviews with their individual posts. And follow me on Goodreads.
I've got so many wonderful books on my TBR pile, and it just keeps getting bigger. My goal is to read one classic each month that I haven't read or haven't read in a while. I want to read some of the older titles each month along with the newer books and new releases that I can't help but get. I love supporting the authors and gracing my shelves with beautiful books at the same time. I do read a lot on my kindle with KU. It helps me decide what I need to get for my shelves. Honestly, I'd love to be able to get all the books, but I have limited shelf space and funds. That doesn't seem to stop me in MANY cases.

I can't wait to share with you the books for February! I have a book review I need to write and am in the process of reading two other books.

As always,

Running Journey: February First Run

Picture
I intended to get this running journey started back in December, but one day turned into a week and a week turned into a month and well, you get the idea. I let the last two months pass without making sure that my daily habits were on track with my goals. I can't even say that is the first time that has ever happened. Far from it.

I have all sorts of excuses, but the fact is, I just didn't "feel like" doing anything. I gave into those feelings. It's true that we let ourselves down more than anyone else in our lives. I really want to change that about myself.

Today, I chose a simple run that wouldn't ask me to push myself beyond what I felt like I had to give. After not working out or running this past month and most of December, I knew I didn't have much to give. With this run, the fastest RPE (rate of perceived exertion) is a 3-4. It was the slowest I've ever run. Most of the time my RPE of 4 leaves me with at least a 15-minute mile. I have to count this as a win since I completed the run with very little walking. I may not have gone very fast, but I did keep going. I was thrilled to get outside today in the sunshine, even though it was still only 50 degrees.

On Saturday morning, I will be running a 10K and I know it will not be in the time that I wish it could be. I am not in the shape I need to be in, and I haven't been running consistently to have a time that I will be thrilled with. Is that going to make me quit and just throw in the towel? NO WAY! I am going to give it my very best and come out a winner in my eyes, if no one else's. My family will be proud of my no matter my time. They have always been my biggest supporters.
If you would like to check out the workouts and running program that I am doing, you can find out more HERE. This is an affiliate link but it will not cost you extra to use it. It will just help me because I shared.

Time to start fresh and work on my routine for better physical and mental health. Here are my Routine goals.
  • Going to bed early each night so I can get enough rest
  • Fueling my body with healthy foods and cutting out unhealthy ones
  • 5-6 Lifting workouts that are 25-40 minutes day
  • Running 3-4 times with varying types of runs EVEN if I have to use the treadmill
  • Walk the days that I don't run at least 30 minutes
  • Rebounding twice a day for ten minutes each
  • Taking Magnesium Breakthrough and Beef Organ Complex supplements
  • Magnesium bath once a week, especially after long runs.
  • Lymphatic lotion nightly on my face and neck
  • Rowe Casa Organics Hormone Kit each night
  • Spend time each morning in Bible study and prayer
  • Close out my day with time in the Word and journalling
  • Spend no less than one hour on my WIP
  • Limit TV to the weekend with no more than 2 hours
  • Limit social media time to posting once daily on all platforms and no more than 30 minutes to connect with friends

I may add to this list over the next few months but for now, these are things I am going to make happen daily. I will show myself grace when needed.

I've spent too much time NOT taking care of myself. Not that I didn't have time, because I did. Everyone has more time than they realize. Every minute we are scrolling reels; we are using our time for something that doesn't benefit us. Every minute spent doing something that has no value or benefit for us or someone else, is time we could have used for something that matters to us.

I want to make this the year that I do the things I've dreamed of doing for so long. I can't do those things if my mind and body aren't in the best shape they can be. When my body isn't functioning like it should from lack of rest, nutrients and movement then my mind can't function correctly, either. That isn't how I want to live my life.

For the month of February, I will be focusing on these routines and making them an everyday part of my life, again. No excuses. These things will be non-negotiable. They will help me reach my goals and will help me be the best ME I can be as I continue to live this life on the Jesus Way with my husband, kids and grands. They need me to be the person I am supposed to be. I have so many things I am tired of putting on hold for the "right time" or "later". It's "later" now! Time to start doing those things and living those dreams that God gave me.

As always,

~A Simple Texas Girl living life on the Jesus Way!
