Pond Life
March 4, 2020
Our theme for March is such a fun one, Pond Life. We are going to have a great time studying this topic. Not just the animals that live in the pond but the plants, insects and just how things are in and around a pond. This post may contain affiliate links. I was able to pull so many great books off our library shelves to put on our themed shelf.
As with each month, we have a CD of songs, two numbers, a color and a shape. Experience Early Learning is a well rounded curriculum for preschool and even kindergarten. Our kindergarten class that starts in August will still enjoy the activities from this curriculum while adding the Paths of Exploration Junior curriculum to their lessons. We are in the teens this month, 13 and 14. Our color is black and the shape is a star. We have a super fun CD for this month. The kids are getting a kick out of the unusual ones.
Every month, we get a book that has a puzzle and a magnet set that goes along with it. They love the magnets because I use sticky tack to put the “storyboard” on the magnet board that is attached to my front door, and they can play out the story with the magnet pieces. The board was super easy to install. I went to an auto supply store and bought an oil pan for under $10 and used some Command Strips to attach it to the door. It was that simple. The kids enjoy having so many things that go together with the story each month. They love playing with the magnets and acting out the story or making up a new one. Experience Early Learning understands that the more things that connect to each other, the more they will hang on to what they have learned.
I recently rearranged some things and set up this small table as a writing station. I would like to be able to set up a few more when I have the space. I put our loose letter pieces and the letters for March on the table as the first activity this week. Then later the first day I put out our number cards. I am going to store all of the number cards for the whole year with the clothes pins together so that it won’t JUST be the two numbers we are working on for the week if they need a bit more challenge. Of course, we have our I Can Read book and helpful sight word pointers and word builders for Pond Life. At different times, I may set up paper with all sorts of writing materials and let the children create as they want. During May and June, I will set up supplies so children can make mother’s and father’s day cards at the writing center. Those are just a few ideas for this table.
Check back each weekend for our fun adventures with Pond Life!
