Number Rhymes & Valentines
February 14, 2020
What a fun week we have had! We started our Nursery Rhyme unit and ended the week with a Valentine’s Day Party. This post may contain affiliate links. I got a few gifts from the kids, the top picture are the things my daughter gave me from her boys and a card from her. Of course, it made me cry! The cups are for Jenni and I from one of our preschool girls and the candy and book are the gifts I gave to our preschoolers. I LOVE giving books each month and for special occasion.
The kids are really good at knowing all the rhymes or learning them very quickly. We’ve listened to our Experience Early Learning Nursery Rhymes CD throughout the days. The first one we did was This Little Piggy. We made fun little puppets. They had to punch the pigs out of the paper and then glue the things to each one that represented each pig in the rhyme. They also had to draw the face and glue on the nose of each pig. They enjoyed playing market in our home living area.
They LOVED making the Sing A Song of Sixpence pies with cornstarch noodles and a little pie tin. They had to cut the strips of paper themselves. They did pretty good. They are getting better and better at cutting. We used a stapler to attached the strips to the tin. Experience Early Learning curriculum always has super fun ways for the children to learn new skills and improve on other ones. You can tell they love it by the looks of concentration as they work and smiles on their faces when they show off their work.
They love doing the I Spy Letters each week. This week we also had some “cube cards” with craft sticks on them. They decided to just take the cards and lay them on the table and play around with them that way. They enjoyed counting the sticks to match the cards. They learned the rhyme 1, 2, Buckle My Shoe.
We had a former preschooler of ours visit us one that that week. We had fun making the mouse ears. The kids know Hickory Dickory Dock really well. That wasn’t one they needed to be taught. Some really got into coloring the ears and others didn’t put a lot into it. They just wanted to attached the ears and play.
They enjoyed the game with the spinner! Experience Early Learning usually puts a game with a spinner in each month. They learn how to take turns, how to spin the spinner and how to be a good winner and how to come in second, third, or fourth. We don’t talk about who “loses”. The kids get to keep going until everyone reaches home after the first one finishes. We do say they “won” but we don’t say the others “lost”.
One of the Make & Play‘s was a Baa Baa Bag. The children colored the characters from the rhyme Baa, Baa, Black Sheep and then cut them out. They colored the bag and we wrote the name on them since they tend to write REALLY large at this point. We wanted it to fit on the bag. They were able to act out the rhyme with the characters and store them in the bag.
The kids are getting better and better at their coloring. We decided to change up some of our Valentine party but coloring to start out the day is a things we do often. They enjoy using markers and we let them when we are able to. We just have to watch closely because a couple of them tend to lose the lids to them!
We always have the parents cover a shoe box and let the kids decorate it and put stickers on them. Everyone brings cards and small gifts for each other. We used to do small boxes but when the parents all started sending gifts for the kids instead of JUST little cards, the boxes wouldn’t hold everything and then parents had too much to carry. Bigger boxes work GREAT!
We’ve started adding cooking to our classes so this was a fun way to do that for the party. It doesn’t look like it but that is strawberry cake. We taught them how to crack the eggs and even let the almost 2 year old preschooler pour in the liquid. They love cooking and we will progress the lessons as the year goes by to really explain the measuring aspect of it to them. Miss Jenni used the extra batter to make a heart shaped cake and decorated it herself.
For snack time we let them ice and decorate their cupcakes. They had bright pink sprinkles and mini M&M’s to put on them, if they wanted to. Some over did the sprinkles a bit but that is ok. It was a party, after all.
I hope you enjoyed a look at our week. We really had fun. Which activity looked like something you would enjoy doing with your kids?
