Keeping Babies Safe
January 25, 2020
Our third week of Baby Animals started out with us playing Veterinarian. We set up the home living area as a vet office. This post may contain affiliate links. They had an area to bathe them, feed them and check them out with the items from our doctor’s kit. We had all of the animals lined up on a bench like you find in a waiting room. We had other activities going on since we didn’t need too many “vets” in the office at one time.
One of our Invitation to Create activities was Paw Prints. That was an interesting activity with different age children. We had some first graders join us that day and we also had as young as 20 months. The younger one just used markers so he felt a part of the group. We had our hands full with the children three and up. We provided brushes for each color so they didn’t need water on the table. We have found that to be a the easiest way. Otherwise, they wash off all the paint even if they continue to use the same color. They were given a paw print stencil and could create on their paper however they wanted. Some did one paw print many colors while some did the same color on several prints.
Another Invitation to Create activity was creating a herd of sheep. They were given cotton balls, dark green tissue paper, glue, markers, and scissors. It took a bit to get them to understand they needed to tear the cotton balls to make more than one cloud and more than one sheep. Even our youngest enjoyed this activity. We used the green tissue paper as grass or trees. The children always have fun with glue. On these activities we try to give as little instruction as possible but at the same time, we guide them by talking about the picture and how we could create something “like” that with the things they have been given. I love to see how different each one is.
The kids really enjoy our I Spy Letter Search each week. Every month we have three letters that we focus on. There are many options that we can use to do this activity, we may try a new one next month. For now, we have focused on using colored pencils. I love that even our youngest can enjoy this activity.
One game we enjoyed was Be Careful, Bunny. We created a “garden” where the children had to find a safe path across it. They turned over one piece at a time and continued that direction but if they found something that was a danger to the rabbit, like a wolf or an owl, we had to change directions. We enjoyed this game several times.
This Make & Play baby bear craft came with small paper sacks and fish shaped letter cards that the children “fed” to the bear through the mouth opening we cut into the bag. They put the eyes and ears on and drew a nose. We would get the kids to find the letter we called out and feed it to their baby bears.
The children loved this game most of all this month. Mama & Baby Bingo was different than just matching the pictures. They had to match the baby animal with their mother. They had to really think about some of them. We switched cards several times until the children were ready to change activities. They asked to play it on other day, as well.
Our tangram activity for this week has a game spinner. They have to spin it and whatever shape it lands on they have to find one in the basket and put it on the duck mat. They love to use the spinners for any game. It is a skill they have to learn to do.
Another Make & Play for this week was our Bear Shakers. We gave the children small paper plates to color brown and draw on the face after gluing on the googly eyes. They put black beans in between the two plates and we stapled them together so they could use it as a shaker. We turned on our monthly CD and they used it to play along to the music.
We LOVE playing with our Lego blocks. We have so many of them that we collected over the years. Many kits have been dumped into the main bucket so we have some interesting animals to add to the fun. We have an entire container of extra pieces and a small bucket of people. The things they can create are only limited by their imagination.
I hope you enjoyed this week’s preschool adventures!
