Exotic Birds
May 1, 2020
Our Exotic Birds week was filled with some very interesting birds. The kids loved it. This post may contain affiliate links. Our topics for this week were “ostrich”, “penguin”, “blue crane”, “peacock” and “bird watching”. Since we have been doing distance learning and I started an online classroom, I have been searching out great videos to share with my classes. That has really helped the kids connect with our daily topics.
Our Invitation to Create has to be one of the kids favorite activities because we just give them supplies and talk about our topic and then they get to create it however their mind sees it. From our youngest to our oldest, they have so much fun making it their own.
We watched lots of videos about the different types of penguins. They loved the Make & Play penguin craft and played with them after they were done. We didn’t use paint for this but it would have been a fun option. This craft can be made easily at home with your own supplies.
Always working on our reading and cutting skills by adding our decoder game each month. The main one has a side that isn’t color coded so we can use that for the older readers to see if they can get it without the same color connection. We keep these for future use any time they need a little extra work or are between activities. It makes for a good activity to do while waiting to be picked up or upon arrival before class starts.
This topic had to be THE MOST FUN. They loved the videos of the real peacocks and how many different colors they can be. And the Make & Play peacock mask was super fun. We took a pencil to roll the cut paper to look like feathers. They put sequins on the mask to take it colorful like the tail. They put it on a giant straw but if you only had a big craft stick, that would work, too.
We closed out this month’s topic with a little bird watching activity. We did a review of all the different birds we learned about and even went looking for birds on a nature walk around the yard. All month we talked about birds and the many things we learned. We read a bunch of books about birds. And we enjoyed the songs we sang from Dance ‘n Beats. We get new songs every month and each day we focus on one of them. They provide great videos with motions. The kids love it!
What was YOUR favorite bird that we talked about this month? Mine was the peacock and hummingbirds. I can’t seem to pick!
