Character Rhymes
February 21, 2020
This week we learned about all sorts of rhymes with characters in them. Once again, they knew just about every one of them that we talked about. This post may contain affiliate links. We went over several from last week, too. We just played the CD over and over. Humpty Dumpty was the first one we did. For our Make & Play activity they were given an egg shaped paper and were to draw his face and clothes or whatever on the shape. THEN they had to cut it into pieces. Some only wanted to cut it into two pieces but one little boy was going cutting crazy and I had to stop him from cutting tiny pieces because he would have NEVER been able to put poor Humpty back together again! One little boy was so proud of his face that he drew on the egg. He is really beginning to enjoy creating and doing things for himself. He is actually pretty good at cutting straight lines, especially at only age 3. They put him back together and glued him on the blue construction paper.
Our Invitation to Create was a web for the Itsy Bitsy Spider. They were shown the picture of the web on black paper and given a small paper plate, white yarn, glue, scissors and sequins. We talked about the picture and how they were going to use the yarn as the web. One little girl asked if they needed to color the plate black. GREAT IDEA! I was so excited to see this girl’s brain kick in to create this activity. We gathered black crayons and colored pencils. I held their yarn as they cut them into smaller pieces to stretch across the plate. Most enjoyed using multiple sequins but we had a lone student put only ONE sequin on his. That was his spider. The others used them as the sparkly dew on the web.
Always a favorite, our I Spy the Letter activity. Some of them have been working really hard to stay in the lines so that we can actually tell WHAT they colored. They are only to color the three pictures that start with the letter we are learning plus the upper and lower case letters. We also did the Hey Diddle Diddle puzzle while saying the rhyme.
Every year, I have at least one or two preschoolers that seem to catch on to reading super fast. In those cases, I have to really be tricky to SEE how much they know. The word match game was a good one to do because I didn’t tell him what the words said. Granted, he MAY have realized the colors match but it didn’t seem like it. He read the words and grabbed the picture that matched. I love that Experience Early Learning puts so many fun activities like this in there each month.
These Old King Cole crowns had to be their favorite Make & Play this week. They got to decorate it then glue jewels on it. They ran around with the crowns on for awhile before they put them up for lunch. And they got them back out again after rest time was over.
Since we were talking about a king, we decided to build some castles with our Kubi blocks. These things are so neat. I am so glad I found them. It gets their minds working as they learn they don’t JUST have to make a square with four pieces. They can make a rectangle with six pieces and so on. I love to get their little minds thinking.
Another week has flown by. February is almost over! I hope you are enjoying seeing our fun Nursery Rhyme themed activities. Next month we will be talking about Pond Life, which will be another exciting month for us. I’m gathering some fun resources to go along with our wonderful curriculum. I hope you will keep checking out our preschool fun!
