Bookmarking Through Life

re you someone who enjoys and benefits from underlining, highlighting and bookmarking verses or passages in your Bible or another special book? I’m VERY particular on what I will or will not write in. In fact, I used to NEVER dream of writing IN my Bible. But….
Growing up with my grandparents, I watched my grandmother put notes of all sorts in her Bible. I have two of her old Bibles that she passed down to me. They are FILLED with wisdom from her daily walk with the Lord and from things she learned from pastors and teachers along the way.
As I have gotten older, I realize that marking things IN my Bible can benefit me because the next time I SEE what I have underlined or highlighted, it will call that memory of when I did it back to my mind. One year, my kids got me a journaling Bible. My youngest daughter and I both have them and we have taken a few classes where we journaled in them. I’ve seen many people use those Bibles to cover the entire page with paint and not be able to see the words below. Personally, I have to still be able to SEE the words in my Bible, even if it is a journaling one. If I cover the words, it has to be a light color. That is ONE option to keep what you have learned fresh and memorable.
Some people use actual highlighters for entire verses. I’ve done that in the past, too. Especially in our camp Bibles. I’ve taken Precept Bible studies and they teach you to mark certain words in a way that brings the meaning quickly to mind when you see it. That is one of my favorite ways to mark my Bible.
The Bible I have now is eight years old. It took me a bit of time before I marked in it but now I underline most things that I mark. I have different colors but there is no rhyme or reason to it. I haven’t written in the back of this Bible yet but maybe someday.
Today, the verses that I looked up had such meaning to me in the season that I am in right at this moment. I made little sticky note bookmarks for each of the verses. I am also going to write them out in a notebook. The reason is because they are verses of encouragement and I need that right now. My morning Bible study is on Living Heart Healthy. The first part of the week I looked up all the verses about “things that cause us to lose heart”. Today I started the section that is about “things that strengthen our hearts”. Just in case YOU need those verses today, here is a list. Psalm 73:26, Proverbs 3:5-6, John 11:25-26, John 11:40, Isaiah 40:31, Lamentations 3:19-26, and 1 Peter 1:6-7.
Something else I like to highlight or underline are things that stand out in a self-help book. There are ALWAYS things that I learn and want to remember, so I mark them. My favorite one right now is Girl, Wash Your Face! I have it on audio, too.
What book are YOU reading right now? Novel? Self-help? Non-fiction? Maybe one of each? I tend to always be reading a self-help AND a novel. Reading is my thing!
