Backyard Bugs

This week we talked about Backyard Bugs. This post may contain affiliate links. We got to learn about ladybugs, spiders, grasshoppers, ants and bees with this week’s lessons. We made some cool headbands and watched videos of real ladybugs. It helps the kids to see things to connect what we learn.
The kids got to sing one of their favorite songs, “The itsy, Bitsy Spider” as we talked about spiders. We learned about all sorts of spiders. The different videos we found make it so fun. The kids made spiders out of shapes and playdough but in our Creative Corner activity they made their own little spiders on a piece of yarn. We decided to use markers but you can use black paint, too. There are different size paper cups, use whatever size you want. We took black construction paper to make the legs.
Ants were fun with our Invitation to Create when they got to build an anthill with a paper cone and sand. We were able to find videos that show how the ants create the hill and their home down in the ground. Of course, they love the song “Ants Go Marching”. Anything that has to do with music and movement is fun here.
The kids LOVE games and this one was really fun for them. They got to use a spinner and get the ants into the anthills. We got to see which anthill got the most ants in it. It was great for counting and playing a game that wasn’t about winning but about taking turns and having fun.
Our Invitation to Create was to make a beehive with bubble wrap and paint. each child got a tiny little bee to put on the beehive when it dried. We have painted with bubble wrap before and it’s always fun. some of the kids drew their own bees on the paper after it dried. We didn’t tell them how to create it, we just gave them the supplies.
The kids enjoy the puppet that we got with our monthly Toy Box. My granddaughter was especially happy to have a turn playing with it. Each month we enjoy a fun box of resources. We use them for month than one month. We use them over and over again.
The kids got a coloring page for each day’s theme. They are really super cute. What is your favorite backyard bug?
